Cultural Connections:
While chairing for Seles vs Navratilova in the 1991 women's singles final, Mary Lou Tierney wore this Fila polo shirt. With this win, Monica Seles recaptured the world No. 1 ranking from her rival Steffi Graf. As a female umpire, Tierney had to be conscious of her attire and trailblazing position. Uniform clothing had to be moderately fitted without obstructing movement. Fussy attire that required frequent adjustments was unacceptable. According to the Guidebook of Athletic Association, "Officials shall dress neatly and appropriately". In this case, polos shirts are a solid unisex option of professional attire for umpires.
