Handheld History: A Virtual Exhibition of Fashion Fans from Across the Globe

Exhibit Overview:

The Lasell Fashion Collection presents an assortment of hand fans that convey stories about cultural history in relationship to this accessory's purpose and artistry. Each example has unique characteristics as defined by time period, country of origin, and functional intentions. Whether used as an advertising tool, a souvenir, or a fashionable extension to a glamorous wardrobe, hand fans hold a prominent position as an ornament that evolves according to human needs and societal trends.

Curators Note:

While admiring this selection of handheld artifacts, be sure to explore the associated materials that provide a context for each fan. Included in every vignette is an overview of the fan in terms of time period, materials, and design elements as well as resources that support how this accessory responds to societal factors. Our student research team has collaborated throughout the spring semester to uncover the importance of fans as highly visible fashion implements with multiple uses.
